Johnathon Westcott is an Assistant Band Director at Blue Valley Northwest High School and Oxford Middle School, both in Overland Park, Kansas. His teaching duties include beginning Brass and Percussion, 7th and 8th grade Band, high school Marching Band, and high school Percussion. This is his first year at Blue Valley Northwest and fifth at Oxford.
Previously, Johnathon taught percussion at Blue Valley West High School for seven years. While at Blue Valley West, six ensembles were invited to perform at the Kansas Music Educators Association In-Service Workshop, including the Percussion Ensemble in 2020 and 2024. The Percussion Ensemble was also invited to perform at the Kansas Percussive Arts Society Day of Percussion in 2019 and 2024. Additionally, the Red & Silver Brigade Marching Band won two Kansas Bandmasters Association Marching Band Championships in 2017 and 2018, attended the Bands of America St. Louis Super Regional Championships in 2017 and 2018, competed at the Bands of America Grand National Championships in 2019, and was a finalist at the Bands of America Iowa Regional Championships in 2023. The Red & Silver Brigade was also invited to perform in London’s New Year’s Day Parade in 2023.
Johnathon is currently studying at Emporia State University, planning on graduating with a Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Effective Practitioner in December 2024. He also studied Music Theory and Percussion Performance at the University of Kansas where he was a Graduate Teaching Assistant. While at the University of Kansas, he studied percussion with Ji Hye Jung and Dr. Michael Compitello. Prior to that, Johnathon attended the University of Kentucky where he earned a Bachelors of Music in Percussion Performance and a Bachelors of Music in Music Education. At the University of Kentucky, he studied with James Campbell. In 2016, Johnathon presented at TEDx Wyandotte “Ideas, Friction, Dialogue” with Dr. Fofo Jackson on “Percussive Art Through Sound and Motion.” Recordings of “Whitby” and “White Hollow” from “Marimba: Technique Through Music” by Mark Ford were published by Vic Firth in 2018.
Johnathon is a member of the National Association for Music Education, the Kansas Music Educators Association, and the Percussive Arts Society. He proudly endorses Innovative Percussion products.
